About the role
Triade is building an integrated delivery squad for a Starburst Enterprise Platform (SEP) / Apache Trino engagement with a US enterprise client in financial services. This is one team supporting one customer — not a set of isolated contract hires.
The squad delivers across two tracks: the data layer (Trino federation and the Iceberg lakehouse) and the access and reporting layer (BI and the semantic layer). Materialized views on Apache Iceberg are the shared hand-off between them, so the two tracks work in step rather than in sequence.
What you will own
You are the hands-on owner of the federated lakehouse platform — designing and building on it, and administering the clusters it runs on. You break down data silos with federated query, so the client gets high-performance SQL across cloud and on-premise sources without heavy ETL.
- Architect, configure, and manage Starburst / Trino clusters and connectors; build federated data pipelines and data products that serve BI and self-service analytics.
- Administer the platform on Kubernetes with Helm — catalogs, connectors, and Dev / QA / Prod separation — owning monitoring, tuning, and availability.
- Implement and optimise materialized views on Apache Iceberg, the shared hand-off into the BI track.
- Own platform security and governance: access control, data masking, and row- and column-level security via Starburst controls or Apache Ranger, with secrets managed in Vault.
- Create data models; develop, unit- and integration-test, deploy, and support components through CI/CD; support UAT and Dev→Prod release.
- Produce enablement content and documentation, and provide daily and weekly status.
What you bring
- Experience — 8+ years in data engineering at a senior level, including 2+ years hands-on managing and optimising Apache Trino or Presto in production.
- Data federation — architect, configure, and manage Starburst / Trino coordinator-worker clusters connecting AWS S3, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and Teradata.
- Platform administration — deploy, configure, administer, and fine-tune Starburst Enterprise / Trino on Kubernetes (Helm): catalogs, connectors, environment separation, and platform health, availability, and observability.
- Performance — tune query execution plans, distributed joins, cluster scaling, and memory allocation for low-latency analytics.
- Lakehouse — implement and optimise open-table formats, principally Apache Iceberg (Delta and Hive where relevant), and maintain materialized views as the hand-off to BI.
- Security & governance — fine-grained access control, data masking, and row- and column-level security using Starburst controls or Apache Ranger; secrets management such as Vault.
- Advanced SQL — window functions, CTEs, and tuning of distributed query joins.
- Cloud & IaC — AWS, GCP, or Azure with cloud object storage (S3 / ADLS); Kubernetes and Helm, Docker, and Terraform.
- Data modeling — data-warehousing fundamentals, star and snowflake schemas, and lakehouse and data-mesh architectures.
- Programming — Python and PySpark.
Nice to have
- Java or Scala, particularly for Trino connector work.
- Relevant cloud or data platform certification.
- Prior delivery into a regulated financial-services environment.
How we work

- Occasional travel to the client site or a Triade office as the engagement requires.
Compensation & engagement
- Rate — USD 60–75 per hour, negotiable based on experience.
- Engagement type — 1099 independent contractor. Initial term with extension by mutual agreement.
